Keep Music Therapy as an NDIS Funded Therapeutic Support

Written by on January 9, 2025

At 3MDR we know the importance that music and art play in a healthy and vibrant community. Which is why we are throwing our support behind this petition to keep music therapy as an NDIS funded therapeutic support.

Every day, people with disability benefit from music therapy delivered by registered music therapists who are members of the Australian Music Therapy Association. However, from February 1st the NDIS will remove music therapy from the Capacity Building – Improved Daily Living category.

Music therapy is an allied health profession with a strong evidence base that can change lives by improving:

  • movement
  • cognition and thinking
  • communication
  • social connection
  • behaviour and self-regulation.

This decision will adversely impact people with disability who rely on music therapy to achieve their goals. Without funding, most participants will lose access to music therapy, leaving many without essential support.

This abrupt decision not only undermines the principles of the NDIS but directly threatens the health and goals of participants who rely on music therapy.
